Hardwood Floor Maintenance 101

Hardwood Floor Maintenance 101

Hardwood floors are the most sought after flooring that you can have in your home. However, you may have heard that they require a bit of maintenance. Have no fear, maintaining hardwood floors is not as hard as it is made out to be.

Vacuum and Sweep

This one may seem like a no brainer, but vacuuming and sweeping frequently can help remove abrasive dirt, gravel, salt and grit that could damage the finish on your flooring. Also, make sure to use a vacuum head that doesn’t have a beater bar as this can cause damage to your floor.

Don’t Wet Mop

Water and wood are natural enemies, so make sure that you never use a wet mop on your floor. When even a small amount of water sits on your floor, it can cause the wood to swell, and warp overtime.

Use Furniture Protectors

Make sure that all of your furniture that is touching the hardwood has some sort of protector on the bottom. Furniture that moves, even slightly can cause scratches to appear.

Trim Pet Nails

Speaking of scratches, make sure to keep your pet’s nails short. Having animals that run through your house without trimmed nails can cause scratch marks.

Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Sometimes no matter how careful you are, your hardwood finish can get damaged. While you may think that your floors are ruined, the great thing about hardwood is that it can always be sanded down and refinished. However, this is not a project to try as a DIY. It’s best to call a professional that can get the job done quickly and beautifully.
