How to Pick the Right Tile For Your Home

How to Pick the Right Tile For Your Home

Tile is a versatile flooring and wall covering that is perfect for high traffic areas with a lot of moisture. It is common to see tile placed in bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas of the house. However, there are so many different types of tile out there, it can make it hard to find the right tiles that will perfectly match your home. Here are a few things to consider when picking out tile for your home:

Location

The first question you have to ask yourself is “Where do I want to put the tile?” Kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways are common places to lay down tile. Wherever you are putting your tile down, take note of your current wall color and décor style and how that location is used.

You’ll want to pick a tile that complements your current home but also functionally supports the space.  For example, there are beautiful tiles out there that have a lot of texture, but the texture could make it hard to clean - making it an undesirable solution for a heavily used room.

Color

When it comes to cosmetic updates to your home, color is one of the most important elements to keep in mind. The last thing that you want is to install tile that clashes with the colors of your current room.

At Quest Interiors, we will work in partnership with you to assist in selecting colors that elevate the design of each unique area. For example, if you are installing tile that connects to warm hardwood floors and the walls are on the warmer side of the color wheel, you don’t want to pick tile that is cooler in tone.

Additionally, while mixing and matching the tone of the tile is frowned upon, contrast in dark and light is encouraged. A light room with dark tiles or a dark room with light tiles can give your space a dramatic and elegant feel.

Dark and Light

Dark and light tiles can change a room's whole look. Light tiles in an already light colored room can make a room feel much bigger than it is. This is because more light is bouncing off of these surfaces and gives the room a much brighter look.

On the other hand, dark tiles can make a room feel smaller as it absorbs more light. If you choose dark tiles, Quest Interiors recommends installing them in an area with a lot of light and open space.

Pattern

Tile now comes in a wide array of patterns. In fact, there is even tile that looks like hardwood floors. There are so many choices to pick from that it can be a bit overwhelming. Quest Interiors emphasizes three tips to help you pick tiles when it comes to considering a pattern.

First, if you have heavy patterned walls, don’t pick a heavy patterned tile. This will make your home look too busy and overwhelm people.

Second, think about the size of the pattern and the space of your room. Very rarely do you want to use small patterned tile in a large space. Save the small patterns for a smaller space like a bathroom.

Third, only use a stone patterned tile when it matches your home’s personality. The marble type of tiles can give an elegant look, but it might not work with some homes.
